From the Sound of a Bell in Kyoto to the Land of Hengchun
In Grace C., one particular object holds a special connection to architect Grace Cheung.
Hanging on the wall is a handcrafted copper bell from Kyoto, a city especially dear to the architect. Made using traditional techniques, the bell carries memories of a place she loves. Gently striking its wooden clapper produces a deep, resonant tone, recalling the quiet atmosphere of Kyoto’s temples.
Closer to home, a custom-made rush grass mat lies beneath the spacious sofa seating area. Its natural texture softens the exposed concrete interior, creating an inviting corner for reading, conversation or simply slowing down. Clothes hang from a branch of native Taiwan Ebony, bringing the materials of Hengchun into everyday life.
The textiles are by Thai designer Sarinya Lim (SRINLIM), whose work has received both the Red Dot Design Award and Good Design Award. Green bed runners and cushions are complemented by touches of yellow and orange-red, echoing the hills and sunset colours of Hengchun while bringing warmth to the grey concrete surroundings.

The Wild Landscape of Hengchun, Between Grasslands and Sea

There are no carefully manicured gardens here, nor an evergreen forest. The grasslands change colour with the seasons, and when the wind passes through, the entire landscape seems to breathe.

As evening approaches, the sun slowly descends towards the horizon. Its final rays fall across the grasslands and the sea, bathing the landscape in shades of gold and orange-red.
The sea lies in the distance, wild grasslands in the foreground, and the architecture stands quietly between them.

Grace C. features a spacious private balcony overlooking Hengchun’s wild grasslands, acacia trees and the distant sea.
An Indonesian-made custom outdoor daybed invites you to stretch out with a book, take an afternoon nap, or simply watch the wind move through the grass. On clear nights, it becomes a peaceful place to gaze at the stars.
Nearby, Crate & Barrel outdoor furniture offers another way to enjoy the setting—over morning coffee, a quiet conversation, or the changing colours of sunset.
